First EURL-PH-FWDB in-person training: on basic short-read data analysis, Salmonella serotyping and cluster analysis 

On 3 and 4 June, the first in-person training course of the EURL-PH-FWDB took place. One of the main objectives of the EURL-PH-FWDB is to provide targeted training and technical support to help laboratories align with international standards. Seventeen participants from across Europe travelled to the Netherlands to attend the two-day course at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in Bilthoven.

The programme combined explanatory presentations with interactive workshops and hands-on practical exercises. The aim of the training was to develop practical skills in working with whole genome sequencing (WGS) data and to improve their understanding of the bioinformatics tools available for processing short-read sequencing data. These tools were applied to Salmonella serotyping and to demonstrate how cluster analysis can be used for epidemiological investigations. As a result, participants strengthened their capabilities for routine laboratory surveillance and improved their preparedness for outbreak investigations.

Following the first day of training, participants attended a social dinner, providing an opportunity to get to know one another, exchange experiences, and build professional relationships.
The meeting encouraged collaboration between European laboratories and strengthened the EURL-PH-FWDB network. The course received very positive evaluations from participants, marking a successful first edition and a strong foundation for future training events.
